How to log a workout

A workout log only helps if it’s fast enough for the gym floor. Here’s a simple flow you can repeat every session.

1. Open your gym log

Start a workout in your workout tracker, pick today’s plan or an exercise from the list, and get to the set screen before you load the bar.

2. Enter weight and reps

Log each set as you finish it — weight and reps. Don’t batch it after the session if you can avoid it; memory lies, especially on accessories.

3. Use the rest timer

Between sets, start the rest timer so your next set starts on purpose, not when your phone buzzes with something else. Consistent rests make strength progress easier to read later.

4. Skim form tips

If your gym log shows form tips or common mistakes for that lift, glance once — especially on compounds. One cue beats rewatching a full tutorial mid-set.

5. Finish and check the summary

End the session so volume, PRs, and streaks save cleanly. Over weeks, those logs feed strength charts — not just a list of numbers.

What to track first

  • Main lifts — squat, bench, deadlift, row, overhead press (or your gym’s equivalents)
  • Reps in reserve — optional; even raw weight × reps is enough to start
  • Consistency — three logged sessions beat one perfect spreadsheet
